Just reward again

I asked a few days ago (see previous post) what honours had been showered on Shane Brathwaite, the young Barbadian athlete, who won the 1997 World Youth Games octathlon in the Czech Republic. Well, I was really pleased to read in the papers today that he received his award from the National Sports Council as their Sports Personality for 2007 (see Nation report; why is it that by 9am the Advocate for the current day is not available online?). Amongst his haul for this award is a "fully loaded" car (Ford Focus), from Ansa McAl. He also won the Junior Outstanding Sportsman of the Year award. Well done, is all I can say.

It's also worth noting that young sprint hurdler, Ryan Brathwaite, who is on an athletics scholarship in the United States, was named Emerging Athlete of the Year and will benefit from a B$8 000 bank account which was opened on his behalf by FirstCaribbean International Bank. Nice gesture. Let's "get there together" as their jingle says.
